A general bit of blather about Pittsburgh sports and National sports.

Ah, my first posting. Hang in there with me while I work through and Tech problems.

"It's official. Penn Hills quarterback Anthony Morelli is considering Penn State.

Morelli is at Penn State this weekend on an official recruiting visit. Morelli, ranked by some scouting services as one of the top 10 quarterbacks in the country, made a verbal commitment to Pitt in August. But verbal commitments are not binding, and Morelli said two weeks ago that he might start listening to other schools." Courtesy of Tribune Review

Sources say that Morelli and his Dad cooled on Pitt after Morelli was not chosen for an All Star game in which Bob Palko coached. Palko's son Tyler is competing for Pitt's starting QB job this year.

The bottom line here is that Pitt really should not want Morelli. Morelli is going to be the next Western Pa. product that is hopelessly overrated. Examples of this are Jawon Walker, Josh Lay and Tutu Fergusen. Because of Western Pa's history of QB's the national scouting services are always in a hurry to label the next great QB from the region. Morelli while possesing the ideal size, 6-4 200 lbs, and athleticism, 4.7 forty and a cannon for an arm, has been said to be lacking in football smarts. The coaches at the Elite 11 found that to be his most glaring weakness. In other words he has all the tools but not the squash. I think Morelli is going to remind people of Chris Rix. Rix, the QB at FSU, has all the tools but always seems to make mind numbing mistakes which prevent his athletism from from taking affect. Walt Harris is not going to dumb down the offense for Morelli which means we can expect errent throws and poorly read coverages.

In any event, Western Pa. is not the High School football Meca it once was. The fact is in Western Pa. we run the ball...ALOT. Which skews any talent evaluation of a QB. The best prospects generally come from along the lines or the defensive side of the ball. Harris should stick to finding skill players in the fertile lands of Florida or on the other side of the state.
